About Craig Macnaughton
Toronto-based artist, graphic designer and filmmaker Craig Macnaughton uses watercolour and pen and ink to examine both the distant landscape and the human form. Having travelled extensively throughout Europe, Southeast Asia and South America, he has spent hours painting in front of famous landmarks, sacred temples and busy street markets to bring together his various influences – Schiele, Klee, the Impressionists, 20th century graphic and interactive design – and apply them to his subjects in a unique and modern way. Lessons learned from landscape and architecture are applied to the nude, which gives the human form an almost topographic quality. Central to his work are gesture and colour, as well as the simple act of observing. He is also an aspiring childrens' picture book author and illustrator, with a few manuscripts in development, including stories about curious dogs, talking clothes and sensitive mountains. Craig is a member of The Canadian Society of Children's Authors, Illustrators and Performers (CANSCAIP) and The Forest Hill Art Club. A stay-at-home parent to a three and five year old, he lives in Toronto with his kids and understanding wife.
